Lip Liner 101: How to Line, Fill and Layer

Lining the Cupid's bow with Nauvelle lip liner

Lip liner is one of the simplest products to add to your routine, and one of the most useful. It defines your lips, helps your color stay in place, and can be worn on its own.

Three ways to wear it

1. Line

Start at the center of your top lip and draw a small X on the Cupid's bow. Then follow your natural lip line out to each corner with short strokes. Repeat on the bottom lip, starting from the center.

2. Fill

After lining, fill in your whole lip with the same pencil. You get an even, velvet finish that you can wear alone.

3. Layer under gloss

Line and lightly fill, then add a gloss on top. The liner gives shape and color, the gloss adds shine. This is the easiest way to get a fuller-looking lip.

How to choose your shade

  • Everyday: pick a shade close to your natural lip color.
  • Defined look: go one shade deeper than your lipstick or gloss.
  • Bold look: match your lipstick exactly.

Tips

  • Start with lips that are not too slippery: blot any balm first.
  • Use light pressure and short strokes rather than one long line.
  • Soften the line with your fingertip if it looks too sharp.
